Varinia and her two sisters were born to an elezen father and garlean mother in the Garlean Empire. While her sisters took after their mother in appearances, Juno even being born with a darkened third eye as is common with half-garleans, Varinia took on the elezen heritage of her father. When she was old enough, Juno left to fight in the war efforts leaving Varinia and Lilias entrenched deeply in the rhetoric of the empire.
Her childhood was filled with the knowledge that everyone considered her an 'other', even the empire itself as she would have no title. A custom for non pure-blood garleans such as herself and her sisters. When the time came, she joined the XIVth legion in the bid to maintain control of Ala Mhigo. While Baelsar's Wall fell, Varinia and her unit were ambushed and she was the sole survivor. She worked to regroup with the legion but was declared a deserter who left her unit to die. She would have been tried harshly being only half-garlean so she took her chances and escaped in the confusion of the still ongoing attack. She ran deep into the wilds of Gyr Abania in the hopes of finding some safety.
